Skywards: Santa Eulàlia

We do occassionally venture out of the North to the big city, so we like sharing features from our friends at Estilo Palma. This is definitely on our list next time we are there, unless its been a boozy lunch 😊

A narrow spiral staircase winds up all the way to the roof. Up here, the city sounds give way to the wind whistling around the pinnacles of the beautiful Gothic church just behind busy Plaça Cort. Lofty, but not so high above the city that you no longer feel part of it. Many people know the roof terraces of the Cathedral but the terraces of Santa Eulàlia are still kind of an insider tip.

While you walk under the flying buttresses and along the large colorful windows of the nave, the grim gargoyles closely watch your steps. The monasteries of Sant Francesc and Santa Clara appear close enough to touch.

And to your feet, the maze of alleys of the old town spreads out to all sides, the houses interlocked like Tetris elements. The view extends further to the sea and over to the Cathedral of Light. From the terrace in front, you can watch life on the vivid square below.

On the way back down your eyes will have to adjust to the twilight of the interior again. But here, too, it sparkles and shines from the altars and holy figures. With its tall columns, high vaulted ceiling and huge rose window Santa Eulàlia is the oldest parish church in Palma. Until La Seu was finished, it even served as the cathedral of Mallorca.

Opening hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Entrance is 5 euros (4 euros for residents).
